I will grant him the key to David’s royal house and
no one can shut what he opens;
no one can open what he shuts.
I will attach him securely like a peg to that house,
and he will bring honor to his father and his family.
On him will hang all the riches,
all the honor, of his family’s future.
The Eternal One, Commander of heavenly armies, has declared it to be so.
The Kind of Life He Lived
In the middle of the night, I wake to thank You
because Your rulings are just and right.
One day spent in Your house, this beautiful place of worship,
beats thousands spent on Greek island beaches.
I’d rather scrub floors in the house of my God
than be honored as a guest in the palace of sin.
All sunshine and sovereign is God,
generous in gifts and glory.
He doesn’t scrimp with His traveling companions.
It’s smooth sailing all the way with God-of-the-Angel-Armies.
God will be what holds things together,
fast and firm during these times.
He will be boundless salvation,
the roots and fruits of wisdom and knowledge.
Zion’s most precious possession
is the people’s awe-filled respect of the Eternal.
Trust the Lord
The holy Lord God of Israel
had told all of you,
“I will keep you safe if you turn back to Me and calm down.
I will make you strong if you quietly trust Me.”
How can a young person remain pure?
Only by living according to Your word.
I have pursued You with my whole heart;
do not let me stray from Your commands.
Deep within me I have hidden Your word
so that I will never sin against You.
You are blessed, O Eternal One;
instruct me in what You require.
My lips have told how
You have delivered all Your wise rulings.
I have celebrated Your testimonies
as though rejoicing over an immeasurable fortune.
I will fix my mind on Your instructions
and my eyes on Your path.
I will find joy in Your ordinances;
I will remember Your word forever.
Happy are the people who walk with integrity,
who live according to the teachings of the Eternal.
Happy are the people who keep His decrees,
who pursue Him wholeheartedly.
These are people who do nothing wrong;
they do what it takes to follow His ways.
You have given us Your precepts
so we would be careful about keeping them.
Oh, that every part of my life would remain in line
with what You require!
Then I would feel no shame
when I fix my eyes upon Your commands.
With a pure heart, I will give thanks to You
when I hear about Your just and fair rulings.
I will live within Your limits;
do not abandon me completely!
THE EARTH LANGUISHES AND THE GROUND BENEATH OUR FEET MOURNS
So now you need to rethink everything and turn to God so your sins will be forgiven and a new day can dawn,
days of refreshing times flowing from the Lord. Then God may send Jesus the Anointed, whom God has chosen for you.
My very being clings to the dust;
preserve my life, in keeping with Your word.
I have admitted my ways are wrong, and You responded;
now help me learn what You require.
Compel me to grasp the way of Your statutes
so I will fix my mind on Your wonderful works.
My soul weeps, and trouble weighs me down;
give me strength so I can stand according to Your word.
Eliminate faithlessness You find in my step,
be gracious, and give me Your guidance.
I have decided to take the path of faith;
I have focused my eyes on Your regulations.
I cling to Your decrees; O Eternal One,
do not let me face disgrace!
I will chase after Your commandments
because You will expand my understanding.
(Psalm 119: 25-32)
THE WICKED WILL BE ASHES UNDER OUR FEET
EVERYWHERE YOU PLACE YOUR FOOT, YOU TAKE THE KINGDOM OF GOD
May Your unfailing love find me, O Eternal One.
Keep Your promise, and save me;
When that happens, I will have a good response for anyone who taunts me
because I have faith in Your word.
Do not take Your message of truth from my mouth
because I wait and rely on Your just decisions.
Therefore I will follow Your teachings,
forever and ever.
And I will live a life of freedom
because I pursue Your precepts.
I will even testify of Your decrees before royalty
and will not be humiliated.
I will find my joy in Your commands,
which I love,
And I will raise my hands to Your commands, which I love,
and I will fix my mind on what You require.
The Eternal One is mine. He’s all I need.
I have promised to keep Your words.
I sought Your blessing wholeheartedly.
Show grace to me as You promised.
I carefully charted out my paths
to align my steps with Your decrees.
I did not procrastinate and hurried
to follow Your commands.
Do not forget Your promise to Your servant;
through it You have given me hope.
This brings me solace in the midst of my troubles:
that Your word has revived me.
Those who are proud cruelly ridicule me,
but I keep to the steady path of Your teachings.
I have considered Your ancient rulings, O Eternal One,
and their memory brings me comfort.
So if we say we are partakers together and enjoy fellowship with Him when we live and move and are walking about in darkness, we are both speaking falsely and do not live and practice the Truth which the Gospel presents.
But if we really are living and walking in the Light, as He Himself is in the Light, we have true, unbroken fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].
If we say we have no sin [refusing to admit that we are sinners], we delude and lead ourselves astray, and the Truth which the Gospel presents is not in us [does not dwell in our hearts].
(1 John 1:6-8)
(Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on 1 Kings 7:13-47)
The two brazen pillars in the porch of the temple, some think, were to teach those that came to worship,
to depend upon God only, for strength and establishment in all their religious exercises.
Jachin, God will fix this roving mind. It is good that the heart be established with grace.
Boaz, In Him is our strength, who works in us both to will and to do.
Spiritual strength and stability are found at the door of God’s temple,
where we must wait for the gifts of grace,
in use of the means of grace.
Spiritual priests and spiritual sacrifices must be washed in the laver of Christ’s blood, and of regeneration.
We must wash often, for we daily contract pollution.
There are full means provided for our cleansing; so that if we have our lot for ever among the unclean it will be our own fault.
Let us bless God for the fountain opened by the sacrifice of Christ for sin and for uncleanness.
So clean house!
Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk.
You’ve had a taste of God. Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God.
Welcome to the living Stone, the source of life. The workmen took one look and threw it out; God set it in the place of honor. Present yourselves as building stones for the construction of a sanctuary vibrant with life, in which you’ll serve as holy priests offering Christ-approved lives up to God. The Scriptures provide precedent:
Look! I’m setting a stone in Zion,
a cornerstone in the place of honor.
Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation
will never have cause to regret it.
To you who trust him, he’s a Stone to be proud of, but to those who refuse to trust him,
The stone the workmen threw out
is now the chief foundation stone.
For the untrusting it’s
. . . a stone to trip over,
a boulder blocking the way.
They trip and fall because they refuse to obey, just as predicted.
But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.
Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it.
Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul.
Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices.
Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives. (1 Peter 2)
