How does Jesus respond to bad news?
“Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.” But Jesus said, “Don’t cry. She is not dead. She is only sleeping.”
When He heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?
1 Thessalonians 2:19
My ears had heard of You but now my eyes have seen You.
By God’s grace and mighty power, I have been given the privilege of serving Him by spreading this Good News.
So faith comes from hearing the message, and the message that is heard is what Christ spoke.
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, but be of GOOD CHEER for I have overcome the world!!
–for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
1 John 5:4
You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near. The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. And let your humility be known to every person; our Lord is near.
James 5:8, 1 Peter 4:17, Philippians 4:5
God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and of a sound mind.
2nd Timothy 1:7
May He strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all His holy ones.
1 Thessalonians 3:13
The Certainty of God’s Promise
God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
Faith Under Pressure
Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.
Faith Brings Joy
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.
If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be cursed! Come, Lord.
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.
1 Corinthians 16:22-24
You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. For in just a very little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay.
James 5:8, Hebrews 10:37
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1, Matthew 24:42, Philippians 1:27
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!
–being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to His people, who live in the light.
1 Corinthians 16:13, Philippians 4:1, Colossians 1:11-12
Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Here is another reason why we never stop thanking God: When you received God’s word from us, you realized it wasn’t the word of humans. Instead, you accepted it for what it really is-the word of God. This word is at work in you believers.
1 Thessalonians 2:13
God’s word is living and active. It is sharper than any two-edged sword and cuts as deep as the place where soul and spirit meet, the place where joints and marrow meet. God’s word judges a person’s thoughts and intentions.
There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept My words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, fill me with love, strengthen my faith, increase my hope in You. Let me live this day walking in the greatest thing of all, You alone, the very essence of LOVE. Amen.
God’s Righteous Judgment of Sin
Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But He will pour out His anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism.
But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.
How priceless is Your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
Psalm 52:8, Psalm 36:7
Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in His kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree. You, by nature, were a branch cut from a wild olive tree. So if God was willing to do something contrary to nature by grafting you into His cultivated tree, He will be far more eager to graft the original branches back into the tree where they belong.
God’s Mercy Is for Everyone
I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ. And so all Israel will be saved. As the Scriptures say,
“The one who rescues will come from Jerusalem,
and He will turn Israel away from ungodliness.
And this is My covenant with them,
that I will take away their sins.”
Many of the people of Israel are now enemies of the Good News, and this benefits you Gentiles. Yet they are still the people He loves because He chose their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For God’s gifts and His call can never be withdrawn. Once, you Gentiles were rebels against God, but when the people of Israel rebelled against Him, God was merciful to you instead. Now they are the rebels, and God’s mercy has come to you so that they, too, will share in God’s mercy. For God has imprisoned everyone in disobedience so He could have mercy on everyone.
Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways!
For who can know the Lord’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to give Him advice?
And who has given Him so much
that He needs to pay it back?
For everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Amen.
My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Then Job replied to the Lord:
“I know that You can do all things;
no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.
You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures My plans without knowledge?’
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer Me.’
My ears had heard of You
but now my eyes have seen You.
Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.”
I am now entrusting you to God and to His message that tells how kind He is. That message can help you grow and can give you the inheritance that is shared by all of God’s holy people.
Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
