The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy people’s defenses, that is, their arguments and all their intellectual arrogance that oppose the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive so that it is obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
Do wandering minds ever end up in good places?
Our culture saturates our minds with lust-inducing temptation and horror-filled images that some call “entertainment.”
But we’re also bombarded by more subtle messages that seep in to encourage an “I deserve it” mentality or thoughts that would define dependency on God as becoming weak.
Worse yet are thoughts that stem from the Enemy: they may start as tiny seeds, but can fully blossom into paralyzing (and typically unfounded) fear, recurring shame from things that have been confessed and fully covered by Christ’s mercy, or untrue “justification” for holding onto unforgiveness.
Are we too willing to simply pray for God’s help with our thoughts…and then go right on thinking them?
Paul exhorts the Corinthians to “take every thought captive.”
That won’t be accomplished with a dainty approach–it’s a war!
The brain is a muscle that needs conditioning and regular flexing.
When our strengthening is fueled by the Holy Spirit’s power, thoughts can be taken captive and permanently held at bay.
Be ruthless in dealing with ungodly thoughts–quickly recognize
them for what they are, pray for the Spirit’s help, and forcefully
replace the thoughts with God-honoring images or Scriptures that counter them. Fight! Strike back!
A passive approach will not result in victory.
Only a full-bore attach will take–and hold–them captive.
“The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”
Holy Spirit, give us Your insight to recognize all types of ungodly thoughts. Strengthen us as we war against thoughts that would drive us away from Christ. And give us the power to condition our minds for the ongoing battle. Amen.
