Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.”
Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,
for He who promised is faithful.
Genesis 18:11, Genesis 17:19, Genesis 21:2, Hebrews 10:23
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God–Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in His heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because He has not believed the testimony God has given about His Son.
1 John 3:1, John 1:12, 1 John 5:10
We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.
One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. EVERY FACT IS TO BE CONFIRMED BY THE TESTIMONY OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES.
Acts 5:32, Deuteronomy 19:15, 2 Corinthians 13:1
One who can give a firsthand account of something seen, heard, or experienced. Something that serves as evidence; a sign.
Attestation to a fact, statement, or event; testimony.
The witness stands by as a third party
to confirm validity.
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Romans 8:16, Romans 8:14
Firsthand authentication of a fact : evidence; an outward sign.
“I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
2 Corinthians 6:18, Galatians 3:26, Galatians 4:6
A covenant between God and the human race : a tangible proof or tribute; an act by which a person determines the disposition of his or her property after death.
It was not through LAW that Abraham and his offspring received the PROMISE that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
In other words, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the PROMISE who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. By faith Abraham, even though he was past age–and Sarah herself was barren–was enabled to become a father because he considered him FAITHFUL who had made the PROMISE.
Romans 4:13, Romans 9:8, Hebrews 11:11
For the LAW made nothing PERFECT, and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, but He became a priest with an oath when God said to Him:
“The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind:
‘You are a priest forever.’”
Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.
For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the LAW commands. The LAW simply shows us how sinful we are. Because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. For SIN is the sting that results in DEATH, and the LAW gives SIN its POWER.
Romans 3:20, Romans 4:15, 1 Corinthians 15:56
For what the LAW was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man, He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
For it is written, “REJOICE, BARREN WOMAN WHO DOES NOT BEAR; BREAK FORTH AND SHOUT, YOU WHO ARE NOT IN LABOR; FOR MORE NUMEROUS ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE DESOLATE THAN OF THE ONE WHO HAS A HUSBAND.”
Galatians 4:27 testifying to Isaiah 54:1 where the Lord spoke through
His witness—the prophet Isaiah—what He spoke in the heavenlies. And the apostle Paul adds his testimony as the third witness–speaking “on earth as it is in heaven” in Galatians.
Everyone who believes in Him is declared right with God–something the LAW of Moses could never do. All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.
Acts 13:39, Acts 10:43
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
1 John 3:2
The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as SONS, the redemption of our BODIES.
And they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the RESURRECTION.
Romans 8:19, Romans 8:23, Luke 20:36
Do we, then, nullify the LAW by this FAITH? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the LAW. So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Romans 3:31, Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:25
The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the WILL of God lives forever.
1 John 2:17
