The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. Psalm 40:5
Wonders, like children, never cease to amaze me. In searching the origins of the expression, “will wonders never cease?“, I discovered that it has been in the English language since the mid-1700’s and can be intoned equally with awe or sarcasm to express surprise when something unusual or unexpected happens.
Wonders, like miracles, come from the hand of God and whether you believe or not, He is not contingent upon you for validation.
Isaiah 55:9, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Plans to Give You the Future You Hope For
“I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope. Then you will call to me. You will come and pray to me, and I will hear you. When you look for me, you will find me. When you wholeheartedly seek me, I will let you find me, declares the Lord. I will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I’ve scattered you, declares the Lord. I will bring you back from the place where you are being held captive.” Jeremiah 29:11-14
For too many years, I spent my life in vain looking for God in all the wrong places, expecting to find Him in my selfish pursuits. When I gave up my ways and started to seek His, in the turning around I found He was with me all along, waiting for me to be still and know that He is…God.
God is a waiting God, He is patient and long-suffering with mankind, can we not wait and watch with Him for the miracles, the wonders He has pronounced for our loved ones and friends? A day with the Lord is as a thousand and a thousand as one day. Time is irrelevant for He has redeemed it with the precious blood of His pure and sinless Son to take us home to Him in glory forever. He is with us all along in ways we cannot imagine working His wonders in the earth today.
“Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.”
Romans 8:26-28 The Message
Jesus Christ is the Eternal Word that breathed Creation into Being.
He is the hands of God that sustain the universe and all that is therein. Yet He has our names engraved on the nail-pierced scars of His hands that purchased our salvation on the cross. Love so amazing, so divine, so wondrous, so ceaseless – it never fails. It always produces what He sends it to do. His Word is Faithful and True and will always never cease. It stands from everlasting to everlasting.
But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
Psalm 33:11, Psalm 71:17
Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
To him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you. O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago.
Psalm 136:4, Psalm 139:14, Psalm 139:17, Psalm 139:18, Isaiah 25:1
One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?”
“You made man a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas”
“He remembers his covenant forever, the Word he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant”
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever”
Lord, you have examined me, and you know me.
You alone know when I sit down and when I get up.
You read my thoughts from far away.
You watch me when I travel and when I rest.
You are familiar with all my ways.
Even before there is a single word on my tongue,
You know all about it, Lord.
You are all around me—in front of me and in back of me.
You lay your hand on me.
Such knowledge is beyond my grasp. It is so high I cannot reach it.
Your eyes saw me when I was only a fetus.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book before one of them had taken place.
How precious are your thoughts concerning me, O God!
How vast in number they are!
If I try to count them, there would be more of them than there are grains of sand.
When I wake up, I am still with you.
Examine me, O God, and know my mind.
Test me, and know my thoughts.
See whether I am on an evil path.
Then lead me on the everlasting path.
(from Psalm 139)
