“Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.”
When one nation conquers another in war there are various phases of engagement until dominion is complete.
The victory may begin with “shock and awe” displays of explosive power that subdue the enemy. High-tech weaponry may be directed at selective targets with pinpoint accuracy and controlled energy. Superior strength breaks down fortifications and flushes out the enemy.
Finally, the conquering army goes throughout the territory, city by city, village by village, to restore order and to establish a new government. When the new government is established, dominion is assured.
It was with this understanding that Paul prayed for the church at Ephesus and at Colosse. He wanted them to know that the power of Christ’s Resurrection had delivered them from the dominion of darkness. They were transferred to the Kingdom of God’s Beloved Son!
When we declare Christ LORD, the power of His Kingdom now governs our lives and gives us dominion over Satan and self.
I find this is a daily choice, so I begin many of my days asking Christ to fill me with His Holy Spirit. I then ask the Holy Spirit to “establish the government of Jesus Christ in my heart today.”
“Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion. For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money. For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed. Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace; that brings good tidings of good, that publishes salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigns! Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.”
As I am governed by the Holy Spirit, it will be evident in the fruit of self-control, or self-government.
1 Corinthians 14:32-33,
“And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”
Father, thank You for the power of the Resurrection to free us from the dominion of sin and to place us in the Kingdom of Your dear Son. Establish the government of Christ in my life today. For those throughout our world who struggle under the domination of habits, addictions, and the emptiness of serving self, send messengers to them today with the Good News of Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name AMEN.
