I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.
I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.
-Ephesians 1:18-20 NLT
What a picture our Heavenly Father provides for us through His servant, Paul. We are to pray that our heart is flooded with light.
This illumination is to take over our senses and flood our mind.
When we look at the outcome of this flood, it is not destructive but intoxicating. It transforms us from hopeless people to people of purpose, power, and love.
When I first began to study this prayer, it immediately dawned upon me that I needed to change positions. I need to look at this from God’s perspective and not my own. Paul says these things are already reality. God has already given us a future, an inheritance, and His transforming power. We need to pray for the scales of unbelief to fall from our eyes. I need my heart flooded with light to see and understand things from His perspective.
Obviously, this prayer should be a regular part of our life. If we are to “begin to understand,” we must continually ask that our understanding increase. We can see the power of God at work in the life of Jesus, however, what about you and me? Make this a personal, daily prayer.
Father, I want You to flood my heart with Your wonderful light and love. Overwhelm me! I want to understand the greatness of Your power. Help m e to see things from Your perspective and forgive me when I doubt Your Word. Amen.
