Who doesn’t desire a better life? We are bombarded with messages from every corner promoting the next “latest and greatest” cure-all, shortcut, and panacea to all the longings known to man. But true fulfillment, lasting peace and real joy are not to be found in the abundance of material things (with the accompanying accumulation of debt). Nor is it found “somewhere over the rainbow” on a cruise or vacation getaway. Like Dorothy the heart yearns for home for there is no place quite like it.
The world’s ways are to feed us with lies and to continually whet our appetite for “more, more, more” never coming to that true contented bliss.
Only God offers us true meaning in life. Real life and true identity are only to be found by coming into proper relationship with God’s will and purpose for our being. When we return to God and seek to know Him, He gives us His love and we discover fullness (restorative wholeness) in fulfilling His plan for our life. This is the abundant, ever-flowing life that comes only from Him. Any other source is nothing more than a slickly packaged lie – for “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (Jesus speaking in John 10:10) God is not just a God of life but of abundant life. So why live the good life or lie? There is abundant life in God.
Jeremiah 29:11-13 (Amplified Bible)
For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.
Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you.
Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart
Isaiah 1:19, “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.”
“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” -Revelation 22:1
In John 4, Jesus is talking to a woman in a Samaritan village. Something about Samaritans, they didn’t quite fit in. They were not welcome to worship in Jerusalem and they were not quite pagans, in that they worshiped the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Jews believed that you had to worship God where He placed His name but through Jesus, God was giving everyone that would hear and obey, the GOOD NEWS that the time is coming, and now is that those who will worship Him will worship Him in spirit and in truth. God is not bound by time! (See Jesus) God is not bound by space! (See Faith) God is not limited to four walls and a roof. (See roof)
John 4:13-14 (Amplified Bible)
Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.
But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.
Is your life a continual flow from the fount of God? Does the Spirit of the Living God that raised Jesus Christ from the dead flood your mortal body and infuse your innermost being with His “Joie de vivre” (Joy of Living)?
Or does your life look more like the Samaritan Woman? You’ve been “around the block” more than a couple times and still not finding peace and satisfaction in anything? The Samaritan Woman’s life was marked by the great longing to be filled, to be made whole and complete by love. She had already had five failed marriages and was living with yet another man outside the bounds of marriage. To others, she looked to be a failure but to Jesus she was a woman in need of His truth and love.
The well of Jacob symbolized the right to come to the God of Jacob and although the Samaritans were not welcome to worship God in Jerusalem, they continued to seek God in the mountains of Samaria. There was a genuine thirst for God in their hearts.
But the well, like “religion“, has limited abilities. It can be used to feed a hunger but not fill it. It can be used to wash us up on the “outside” but inside there remains the stain of sin. It can even wet your whistle but the thirst will return.
Without the love of God which is His power, “religion” is only a form of godliness but denying His power.
The truth remains that people need God for wholeness, for fulfillment and for completion.
Jesus is God’s promise of the water of life everlasting. WE can ALL have this life but we must come to HIM as SOURCE. As we tap into the love relationship with God, the desire and taste for all else will fade and we will discover our real life in Him.
If you’re tired of being fed a lie and the “good” life has left a stale taste in your mouth, pray with me today for Jesus to come into your heart and fill it to the uttermost and bring forth His life-giving flow.
God, forgive me for neglecting You the Creator, the Source of all life to seek satisfaction in wells dug by human hands. Forgive me for thinking that real joy, peace, acceptance and satisfaction can be found in mere things. Give me to drink from Your river of living water. Make my life a continual flow of Your love and life to the thirsty souls around me. AMEN.
