Exodus 17:8-16, “Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim*…
The name Rephidim means Spreadings or Supports.
The name Amalek represents intellectual doubt, the kind that erodes one’s sense of belief that Almighty God is running world.
..And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Aaron – light bringer
Moses – drawn
Hur – prisoner
There was a reason those three men were together on the hill that day.
To the natural eye, Aaron and Hur supported Moses arms when he grew weak.
Together the three represent Christ’s victory over sin and death, saying in
John 12:32, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.”
As prisoners we are drawn to the light bringer who is lifted up; the one who can set us free, Jesus.
And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
Romans 8:36-39, “As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
