Jacob when running away from the angry brother Esau happened to sleep at Luz.
It is there that he dreams of that ladder of Heaven and renames the place, Bethel
which means “House of God” the place where his grandfather Abraham had dwelt (Gen 12:8).
To the spiritual fathers and through the prophets, we are given exceedingly great and precious promises by God’s Holy Word.
Says the Creator: “I am God Almighty, God all-sufficient, able to make good the promise in due time, and to support thee and provide for thee in the mean time.” Two things are promised; be-coming the father of a great nation, and be the master of a good land”.
Speaking through Jeremiah: saying, “But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.”
Diamond was the remembrance-stone for the tribe of Naphtali whose names means “wrestling, prevailing.”
Genesis 49:21, “Naphtali is a hind let loose: he gives beautiful words to his people.” Naphtali was born of that sibling rivalry each coveting the others’ gifts.
Their weakness is jumping from one whim to another if not stabilized by the wisdom of the Word. Lovers of life and people, they are all about enjoyment, pleasure and happiness. Frail in nature, they tend to be weak in their choices at times and gullible.
Although hard-headed, yet slow to anger, they don’t hold on to bitterness because frankly nothing holds their attention for long!
It is in their nature to bring light and life to those around them. But if not released by the fire of the Holy Spirit, their inner beauty remains trapped under fierce guard.
Their honor comes from acknowledging the purity of their humble beginnings.
Of them, Moses says:
“…Satisfied with favor and full with the blessings of the Lord:
POSSESS the west and the south!”
Through Ezekiel (chapter 37),
“And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD;
And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwelling places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their childrens’ children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.
Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
The name Luz can mean “Turn aside, depart” but the true meaning is
Almond in Hebrew means “the awakening one“, because the almond tree was the first tree to awake from the sleep of winter and blossom. It spoke of the speedy and powerful result of light.
The rod of Aaron bore sweet almonds on one side and bitter on the other; if the Israelites followed the Lord, the sweet almonds would be ripe and edible, but if they were to forsake the path of the Lord, the bitter almonds would predominate.
The almond blossom, a model for the menorah which stood in the Holy Temple,
Almond branches are also a symbol of the Virgin Birth of Jesus.
Jeremiah 1: “Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.”
1 Pet 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
